Byron Mertins Osborne, Jr., 90 of 809 Kay Street, Lenoir, died Sunday, October 27, 2013 at his home.
He was born on November 27, 1922 in Asheville, North Carolina to the late Ruth M. and Byron M. Osborne. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his daughter, Margaret Ann Sarley.
Mr. Osborne served in the United States Army during World War II. He served from 1942 until 1945 as a Staff Sergeant in the China Burma India Theater. He received the Bronze Service Star, the Good Conduct Medal, the Victory Medal, and the Distinguished Unit Badge. He was a 1949 graduate of University of North Carolina, with a Bachelor of Science in Business Commerce. He went on to become the Western North Carolina Regional Manager of Southern Bell Telephone Company, where he retired in 1982, after 32 years.
He was a member of First Baptist Church of Lenoir. He was also a member of the Lions and Rotary Clubs.
Mr. Osborne is survived by his wife of 61 years, Kathryn Worley Osborne, of the home. He is also survived by one daughter, Kathy O. Chandler and husband Robert, of Hudson; grandchildren, Jennifer L. Fox and husband Shane of Lenoir; Justin G. Chandler of Hudson; Casey S. Boseck and husband Martin, of Bel-Air, Maryland and David M. Sarley, Jr. and wife Leisa of Huntersville; and great-grandchildren Ryan and Caroline Fox; Ashlea, Courtney, and Gracie Boseck; and David and Daniel Sarley.
The family extends warm gratitude to Mr. Osborne’s caregivers: Claudia Dixon, Resha Shell, Sue Hartsoe, Shirley Moore and Linda Perkins.
Memorial services will be held at First Baptist Church of Lenoir on Wednesday, October 30, 2013 at 2:00 PM with Dr. David Smith officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service at 1:00 PM in the church parlor.
