He was born on October 5th, 1936 in Caldwell County, North Carolina to the late Alwin Jay Johnson and Connie L. Annas Johnson.
He was married to Rebecca Ann Hale Johnson on December 13, 1957. Mr. Johnson served in the Army and National Guard and retired with 30 years of service to his country. He also retired as the Lumberyard Superintendent from Kincaid Furniture Company after loyally serving 37 years.
Mr. Johnson joined the Army in 1953, where he served in Germany and in the Drum and Bugle Corp. He later joined the Army National Guard, where he served as a Platoon Sergeant. He was called to active duty in 1990 and was deployed to Saudi Arabia for Operation Desert Storm.
Mr. Johnson never met a stranger. He loved people, music and spending time with his family. He was a strong Christian and often shared his personal convictions and life stories with others. He would like to be primarily remembered through the legacy of his children and their love and commitment to their Mother and their families. He often stated that although life is not always what we hoped it would be, that we should make the best of each day that the Lord has given us. He demonstrated this daily through his strong character and uplifting, optimistic spirit.
Those left to cherish his memory include devoted wife of 61 years, Rebecca Ann Hale Johnson; four children, Carrol D. Johnson Jr (Junior) and wife Tammy Kirby Johnson, Tim Johnson and wife Tatia Widner Johnson, Lori Johnson Alala, Debra Johnson Bush (Debbie) and husband David Bush; grandchildren, Amanda Johnson Scoggin and husband Travis, Timmy Johnson, Tyler Johnson, Dustin Murphy and wife Tasha, Makayla Johnson, William Sides (Will), Olivia Alala, Morgan Bush, and Isaac Bush; and great-grandchildren, Sarah Rebecca Scoggin, Makenzi and Alex Day, Zayden Johnson, and Georgia Irene Bradshaw.
A funeral service to honor the life of Mr. Johnson will be held on Monday, March 4, 2019 at 3:00 pm at Union Baptist Church with Rev. Mark Robinette officiating. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service, from 1:45 pm until 2:45 pm at Union Baptist Church.
Burial with military honors will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Park in Lenoir.
Pallbearers will be from the United States National Guard. Grandsons of Mr. Johnson will serve as honorary pallbearers.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to all those that cared for him in his final years, including Visiting Angels, Brookdale Assisted Living, Hickory Falls Health and Rehab and Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care. He touched many people and was cared for with great compassion.
The family will receive flowers or memorials may be made to a local Veteran’s of Foreign Wars organization.
