Gunnery Sergeant Charles William Cardwell, age 90, of Lenoir, North Carolina passed away on Friday, August 16, 2024 at his home, surrounded by his family and good friend, Bill Robbins. He was born June 17, 1934 in Rockingham County to the late William N. and Della Chatman Cardwell.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a special daughter-in-law, Donna Cardwell.
Mr. Cardwell joined the Marine Corps in 1953 and served in Okinawa, Japan, Europe, Cuba and the Caribbean. He was in the 3rd Marine Division. After more than 22 years of service, he retired in 1975 and settled in Caldwell County He worked for Kincaid Furniture Company in Hudson as a Supervisor over shipping; then Broyhill Plant 3 as a night watchman. He drove a bus and substituted for 3 years at Baton Elementary School; then worked for and retired at Senco Fastening Systems after 10 years. He was a member of the Masonic Hibriten Lodge # 262-VFW Post 1957 and American Legion Post 29.
A funeral service to honor Mr. Cardwell will be held on Thursday, August 22, 2024 at 2:00 pm in the chapel of Pendry’s Lenoir Funeral Home. Interment will follow the service at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum with military honors provided by the United States Marine Corps.. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service, from 12:45 pm until 1:45 pm at Pendry’s Lenoir Funeral Home.
Survivors include his wife Mrs. Willa Dean Simmons Cardwell of the home, a son, Charles W. Cardwell Jr. two daughters, Joy Y Aldridge and husband Mike of Granite Falls, Jill C Eckard and husband Kevin of Lenoir, two grandchildren, Danny Aldridge and Kicia Smith, both of Lenoir, and two great grandchildren, Brianna Morey and Brooke Aldridge.
