

Mrs. Derr was born January 24, 1930 in Bristol, TN to the late Joseph Jones Whittington and Lavalette Louise Jones Whittington Jones. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Alfred Derr; her step-father, Edward Samuel Jones, Jr.; sisters, Sara Lucille Whittington and Ella Jean Burnette; brothers, Charles Ivan Whittington and Joseph Jones Whittington; a grandchild, Micheal Wayne Whittington, II.
She was a retired cook and retired from Thomasville Furniture Company. She was a member of Smith Memorial United Methodist Church and was a member of the United Methodist Women organization and was a Brownie Troop leader.
Those left to cherish her memory are her sons, James Patton Whittington, Newport News, VA, Micheal Wayne Whittington and wife Rose of Hopewell, VA, Lester Eugene Whittington of Lenoir, NC, Barry Fitzgerald Derr of Lenoir, NC, Joseph Patrick Derr of High Point, NC and Gwen Hayes of Atlanta, GA; her daughters, Gloria Jean Whittington, Sara Lynn Whittington, Terri Allen Derr, Ella Louise Derr, and Iris Lorraine Derr, all of Greensboro, NC; special friends, Robin Scott and Dorothy G. Horton, both of Lenoir; fifteen grandchildren; a host of great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, Joseph Ivan Whittington, Yolanda Whittington and Elisha Whittington McDaniel, all of Washington, DC and a God-daughter, Jasmine Burgess.
A memorial service will be held Friday, February 22, 2013 Smith Memorial United Methodist Church at 1:00 p.m. with Reverend Charlie Rivens and Reverend James “Ike” Perkins officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family asked that contributions be sent to Smith Memorial United Methodist Church, 426 Woodsway Lane, Lenoir, NC 28645.
