Ms. Doris Jean Austin Scruggs, age 82, of Lenoir WENT TO JOIN HER Lord and Savior on Thursday, October 15, 2020.

Born on August 4, 1938 in Caldwell County. Doris was a daughter of the late Junie Lee Brown Day and Harv Austin.

Doris worked as a cashier at the old Williams Grocery in Valmead, where she knew all the customers by name. Later she worked at Allergan, and retired from there. She was a wonderful cook and never used a recipe. She enjoyed gardening and working in her flowerbeds. She also enjoyed dancing and feeding ANY animal that came within 10 feet of her house. However, her beloved dog Dippy ruled the hillside.

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by a son, Keith E. Kirby; a sister, Jeanette Henderson; two brothers, Tommy Austin and Randy Day.

Those left to cherish her memory are three sons, Jerry Curtis and wife Lora, Johnny Curtis and Jeffrey Kirby; two sisters, Mary Ellen Anderson, and husband Berkley, Geneva McCloud; a brother, David Day and wife Ruby.

As Doris was the matriarch of our family, there are many nieces’ nephews’ cousins and grandchildren.

A funeral service to honor Mrs. Scruggs will be held on Monday, October 19, 2020 at 3:00 pm at Miracle Church with Rev. David Allen Day officiating. Burial will follow the service at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens in Lenoir.

The family will receive friends for an hour and a half prior to the service, from 1:30 pm until 3:00 pm at Miracle Church.

Memorials to honor her may be made to the Caldwell Humane Society at 829 Fairview Drive Southwest Lenoir, 28645.

Words of comfort may be expressed to the family at www.pendrysfuneralhome.com.

To the family. Sorry to hear about Doris's passing. I worked with Doris when I was in high school at Harris Teeter 1974-76. She was a very kind to every customer that she checked out. Have never heard or knew anymore until now.

Prayers to you.

When I come to the end of the road and the sun has set for me, I want no rites in a gloom- filled room; why cry for a soul set free? Miss me a little- but not too long and not with your head bowed low. Remember the love that we once shared. Miss me- but let me go. For this is a journey that we all must take and each must go alone. It's all a part of the Master's plan, a step on the road to home. When you are lonely and sick of heart, go to the friends we know and bury your sorrows in doing good deeds. Miss me- but let me go. I will see you again my little buddy.

They say there is a reason, they say that time will heal, but neither time nor reason, will change the way I feel, for no-one knows the heartache, that lies behind my smile, no-one knows how many times, I have broken down and cried, I want to tell you something, so there won't be any doubt, you're so wonderful to think of, but so hard to be without. I love you forever, Little Doris
