Earl Rodney “Rocker” Wilson, 87, of Lenoir, went home to be with his Lord on Sunday, February 10, 2019 at Caldwell Memorial Hospital while surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Wilson was born on September 18. 1931 in Caldwell County to the late Woodrow Wilson and Ruth Reece Wilson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Betty Jean Helton, 3 brothers, Glenwood, BoBo and Robert Wilson and 2, brothers-in-law, Norris Dillard and Ned Triplett. Mr. Wilson was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was a member of Whitnel First Baptist Church where he was know as the “Bubblegum Man”. He was involved in the food ministry there, the food ministry at Crossroads Community Church and was a past Governor of the Lenoir Moose Lodge. He was a huge sports fan, loved Duke Basketball, and Atlanta Braves Baseball. He played some semi-pro baseball in his younger years and had a collection of collectible toys he found very amusing. Rodney will be most remembered for his quick wit and wonderful sense of humor and will be greatly missed. Rodney was a proud veteran of the United States Army where he served honorably during the Korean War. He was a Sgt. 1st Class in Company A, 180th Infantry, 45th Division. Those left to cherish his memory include his sons, Earl Rodney Wilson Jr and wife Connie of Hudson, Randall L. Wilson and wife Tonya of Hudson, daughter, Patsy Wilson Crawley and husband Gene of Granite Falls, brother Freddie Wilson and wife Judy, of Lenoir, sisters, Joyce Triplett, Reba Barlow and husband Roy, Norma Dillard, all of Lenoir and 2 sisters-in-law, Peggy Wilson of Lenoir and Anne Wilson of Greensboro. Also left to cherish his memory are nine grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren and precious dog, Lilly who was always by his side. A funeral service to honor Mr. Wilson will be held on Wednesday, February 13, 2019 at 1:00 pm at Whitnel First Baptist Church with Rev. Stuart White, Rev. Jack Church and Rev. Steve Hedgecock officiating. The family will receive friends for two hours prior to the service, from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm at the church. Burial will follow the service in the church cemetery. Military Honors will be provided by the United States Army and the Caldwell County Veterans Honor Guard. Serving as pallbearers will be Allan Shumate, Hunter Shumate, Dustin Wilson, Mark Wilson, Ronnie Wilson and Cody Shumate. Honorary pallbearers will be Colt Seter, Derik Wilson and Austin Davis.
