

Elizabeth “Betty” Clarke Martin, 69, of Raleigh passed away Monday, September 9, 2013 at Elmcroft of Raleigh.
Ms. Martin was born in Caldwell County to the late Clarence Wilson Clarke and Martha Louise Hoover Clarke. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, John Clarke.
She was retired from BB & T in Charlotte, a former member of the First Baptist Church of Lenoir and a graduate of Lenoir High School where she played Clarinet in the band and also a graduate of Mitchell College. She was an excellent tennis player and supreme shagger. Betty was past president and Homemaker of the Year of the Mecklenburg County, NC Extention Homemakers Club as well leading her daughters' Girl Scout Troops.
Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Christine Bannerman of Raleigh and Amanda Maer of Huntersville; her brother, Clarence “Sonny” Clarke of Florida; a sister, Martha Abernethy of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren, Emily Louise Bannerman of Raleigh and Cora Elizabeth Maer of Huntersville; nieces, Jessica Abernethy Lindsay of Raleigh, Lydia Anne Abernethy of Jackson, Wyoming and Melinda Suddenbert; nephews, David, Steven and Robert Clarke; grand-nephews, Adam and Tyler Clarke and a grand-niece Rachael Clarke; cousins, Judy Lovins, Kay Clarke and Spencer Clarke.
A funeral service will be held Thursday, September 12, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church with Rev. Richard Sides officiating. Burial will follow at Belleview Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, September 11, 2013 from 7:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at Pendry’s Lenoir Funeral Home.
