It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ralph “Gary” Baker, age 81, who left us on January 21st, 2025 while surrounded by his loving family following a brief illness. Gary was born on October 14, 1943 in Caldwell County to the late Ralph W. Baker and the late Arthie Mae Greene Baker.
Gary was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. Gary was known for his unwavering faith and deep commitment to his family and community. Gary was a member of Union Grove Baptist Church. Gary retired from the Caldwell County School Bus Garage after 25 years of faithful service.
Gary found happiness in the simple pleasures of life. At home, Gary found comfort in the company of his wife and dog, Teddy. It was not uncommon to find him lounging on his recliner, enjoying a good western on television. His children and grandchildren were his pride and joy. He shared with them a life full of love, wisdom and support. He also had a lifelong love for the outdoors, particularly fishing and camping. He found solace on the water in his beloved boat. His love of nature extended beyond the water and into his hobby painting pictures of landscapes. Gary was a true craftsman. He could often be found in his workshop, surrounded by tools and projects, always tinkering and creating something new. Whether rebuilding his old boat or something for his family, his hands were never idle, and his ingenuity was ever-present.
Gary’s warmth, generosity, and sense of humor made him a beloved presence in the lives of his family and friends. He never met a stranger. He was always ready to lend a helping hand, share a story, or offer a word of encouragement. He was a ray of sunshine. His legacy of kindness, and love for life will live on in the memories of those who were fortunate enough to know him.
Gary is survived by his wife Linda Baker of 58 years, two daughters, Carlene Wilkie and husband Robbie of Granite Falls, and Jennifer Baker Chang and husband Michael of Richmond, VA, three grandchildren Mindy Coffey and husband Chad of Granite Falls, Connor Chang, and Spencer Chang of Richmond, VA, a brother Alen Baker and wife Scottie of Huntersville, NC, and his precious dog Teddy.
A funeral service to honor Gary will be held on Saturday, January, 25, 2024 at 3:00 pm at Union Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Sam Craven officiating.
The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service, from 1:45 pm until 2:45 pm at the Union Grove Baptist Church.
Serving as pallbearers will be Chad Coffey, Connor Chang, Michael Chang, Robbie Wilkie, Spencer Chang, and Tyler Greer. Interment will be held privately at a later date.
