Gearlene S Harris

Gearlene S Harris, 82, passed away Thursday, January 7, 2021 after an extended illness.

Gearlene was the daughter of the late Labe and Webber Smith and the granddaughter of J.C.and Nettie Digh of Morganton, NC.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, S. Bruce Harris, of Lenoir.

Gearlene is survived by her brothers, Gilbert, Richard, and Don Smith of Morganton, NC, and a sister, Becky Clark, of St Petersburg, FL. She is also survived by sisters in law, Nellie Prevette, Metta Brown, and Jackie, Caroline, and Barbara Harris of Lenoir, NC and numerous cousins. She adored her nieces and nephews from both the Smith and Harris families and took great pride in being an aunt and great aunt to all of them.

Gearlene was employed as a bookkeeper with Bernhardt Furniture from 1969 til her retirement in 2001. Upon retirement she maintained her friendship with many of her coworkers and enjoyed birthday celebrations with them for many years.

Gearlene was an active member of Lower Creek Baptist Church in Lenoir, NC. She was proud of her fellowship with the Gleaner’s Sunday School Class and served many years as secretary. She was also a member of the Penney Mission Group and looked forward to yearly volunteerism with Samaritan’s Purse. She enjoyed many activities and trips with fellow members of the church.

She shared many stories over the years while sitting around the dining room table over coffee which will be remembered with fondness by her family and friends.

A private graveside service will be held at Blue Ridge Memorial Park at 2pm on Thursday, January 14, officiated by Pastor Kevin Burns. The family expresses special appreciation to Elaine Brookshire and Karen Bush for their dedicated support for Gearlene during the final stages of her illness.

Memorial contributions may be made to Caldwell Hospice & Palliative Care at 902 Kirkwood St. Lenoir NC 28645 and to the library at Lower Creek Baptist Church.
