Gilbert Lee Richter

Gilbert lee Richter, 91, of Lenoir, passed away from this earth on Thursday, January 11, 2018. He lived a full, very active, productive and interesting life. This part of his journey is over and what a grace-filled part it was.

He was born in 1926, which was 3 years before the great depression, to the late Charles and Wanda Richter. He spent his youth in Lynbrook, New York, where he graduated in 1944 from Lynbrook High School. Upon graduation at the age of 17 he enlisted in the US Navy. He served in the Atlantic Theater aboard the US Neunzer DE150 during WWII. He was a member of the Naval Reserve for over 70 years. His name is honored at the Wall of Honors Veterans Monument at Eisenhower Park, Westbury, NY.

He was a member of the USS Slater Destroyer Escort Association Liberty chapter DE, Soldiers of NY and Telephone Pioneers Bellmore, NY. Mr. Richter graduated from New York University Farmingdale with an Electrical Engineering degree. He was employed for 37 years at IBM as manager development data systems division. While at IBM he attended technical classes at UNC Chapel Hill and Harvard University in Boston, MA.

Mr. Richter was a member of St. Marks Lutheran Church where he served on various committees. He served 20 years as supervisor of the Zoning Board of Fishkill, NY. He was chairman of the Lenoir Chapter of the Red Cross.

Mr. Richter is also preceded in death by his first wife Hilda Blum.

He is survived by his daughters; Linda and Diana Richter, two grandchildren; Virginia and Jacob Andres, his childhood friend and wife Elizabeth Powell Richter.

A funeral service will be held at St. Marks Lutheran Church on Saturday, January 20, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Dr. Robert Beard and Rev. Jan Huntley officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

I could write pages of stories and moments shared with Gil. He was a friend, and we enjoyed each other's wit and his wisdom. I will miss him, and Elizabeth I hope you are doing well.
