

James Walter Hartley, 90, of Lenoir passed away Saturday, August 6, 2016. Born on October 1, 1925 in Caldwell County, NC to the late William Lee and Edna Bowman Hartley, and the husband of Marie Carlton Hartley for 65 years.
Other than his parents he is preceded in death by three sisters; Ruth Oliver, Bernice Spears and Della Mae Pilkenton and two brothers; Edgar and Cecil Hartley, all were of Lenoir.
Surviving, other than his wife Marie are two children; a daughter, Elaine Hartley Lockhart and husband Steve of Hickory, a son, Bruce Douglas Hartley and Bonnie of Gatlinburg, Tennessee, granddaughter; Heather S. Stone and husband Jimmy of Granite Falls, great grandson; Rhyan Stone of UNC Chapel Hill, great granddaughter; Samantha Stone of Granite Falls, a brother and sister-in-law; Wayne and Patsy Carlton and special friends, Hurley and Betty Hawkins. Also surviving are many special nieces, nephews and other relatives. He loved them all.
James served in World War II, Company B, 7th Regiment in France and Germany for 2 years as a platoon-runner, serving with General Patton. After discharge, he worked for the Department of Transportation in Hudson for 37 years. James loved music, gardening and traveling yearly to the Company B, 7th Regiment reunion hosted by different members of the regiment. He hosted one here in Lenoir in 1990.
A Celebration of James’ life will be held Wednesday, August 10, 2016 at 2:00 pm at Clarks Chapel Baptist Church with Reverend Dale Payne, Reverend Eric Lane and Jimmy Stone officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Garden in Lenoir. Military honors will be provided by the United States National Guard and the Caldwell County Veterans Honor Guard. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service, from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm at the church.
Pallbearers will be Robert Marshall, Barry Jarvis, Bruce Mannas, Gary Pope and Grady Hawkins
Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Hurley Hawkins, Doug Hartley, Steve Lockhart, Rhyan Stone and Jimmy Stone.
