She was born Daisy Marie Carlton September 1, 1931, in Caldwell County, to the late William Dewey and Lola Bell Carlton, and was the wife of the late James Walter Hartley for 65 years.
In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by her brother Don Maynard Carlton of Lenoir.

Marie graduated from Hudson High School in 1949. The classmates of ’49 have maintained a close and special bond for over seven decades since graduation. Marie looked forward every year to be at her post as a greeter at their annual Fall class reunion. The Hudson School, now the Hudson Uptown Building (HUB), commemorates the Class of ’49 as the first graduating class of the new school building with a display of class photographs. Upon a visit to the HUB Marie was very proud of the display and had a story for nearly every classmate.
Marie retired from Broyhill Industries, Customer Service Department after 47 years and often spoke of her co-workers as friends. She enjoyed her retirement and home fully. She loved to vacation, and especially loved Gatlinburg. Her family and close friends were always her priority.
