Ms. Smith was born August 1, 1949 in Caldwell County to the late Robert Lewis Goforth Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Tolbert Goforth.
Ms. Smith was a teacher’s assistant at Whitnel Elementary School and worked at Hibriten High School as a special needs assistant. She was also a dedicated member of Mount Hermon United Methodist Church in Hudson where she served the God she so dearly loved. Mary was known for the greeting cards she regularly and so lovingly sent to church members and friends. She was a loving mother and was so very proud of her son James and the fact that he proudly served our country in the United States Army.
Those left to cherish her memory are her son, James Lee Smith Jr. and wife Rachel of Sanford, a brother, Robert Lewis Goforth Jr. and his wife Debbie of Lenoir, her nephew, Josh Goforth and wife Jennifer of Lenoir and a special friend, Ellen Needham of Morganton.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, July 30, 2021 at 11:00 am at Mount Hermon United Methodist Church with Rev. Tracy Love officiating. Burial will follow the service at Mount Hermon United Methodist Church in Hudson.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 29, 2021 at Pendry’s Funeral Home from 5:00 pm until 6:30 pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests the memorial be made to a charity of your choosing.
