Mary Hood Thompson

She was born August 11, 1919 in Caldwell County. Mary was 91 years old. She was preceded in death by her Mother, Bina Lorena Conley Hood, Father, John Carl Hood, Husband, Raymond Lander Thompson, Brother, Carl Kenneth Hood, Sister, Hughey Elizabeth Hood Smith and Granddaughter, Erica Lane Thompson.

Mary was a lifelong resident of Lenoir, NC. She began her career at the Clerk’s Office in 1946. She held the positions of Clerk and Assistant Clerk of Court prior to her appointment as Clerk of Superior Court after the unexpected death of the Clerk Walter Sullivan in 1965. In 1966, she ran for and was elected Clerk of Court, a position she held until her retirement in 1981.

Mary devoted her life to God, her family and friends. She always got particular enjoyment out of presenting small gifts to people, never wanting anything for herself, but a smile. She could also be counted on for encouragement and sound advice.

She is survived by Daughter, Mary Lynn Thompson Miller and her husband, Kenneth Douglas Miller, Sr. and Son, Michael Lander Thompson and wife Deborah Jones Thompson of Lenoir, NC. Brother, William (Bill) Armond Hood and wife Thelma Farthing Hood of Lenoir, NC, Sisters, Nancy Hood Moore of Lenoir, NC and Brenda Hood Proffitt and husband Thomas (Tommy) Edgar Proffitt IV of Gamewell, NC. She is also survived by four Grandchildren, Kelly Denise Miller Shook and husband Chris Shook of Nebo, NC, Kenneth Douglas Miller, Jr. and wife Corie of Hudson, NC, Brandon Michael Thompson of Lenoir, NC and Tyson Kirk Thompson of Greensboro, NC. Six Great Grandchildren Ashley Lynn Miller Baker and husband Steven of Lenoir, NC, Amber Nicole Miller of Nebo, NC, Stacy Katherine Miller of Lenoir, NC, Matthew Raymond Miller, Christopher Douglas Miller and Katelyn Denise Miller of Hudson, NC. Three Great, Great Grandchildren, Tanner Steven Baker, Gavin Christopher Baker and Jayden Nicole Smith.

A funeral service will be held for Mrs. Thompson, Sunday, February 6, 2011at 3:00 P.M. at the United Presbyterian Church in Lenoir, NC with the Reverend Stephen M. Austin officiating. The family will receive friends prior to from 1:30 P.M. until 3:00 P.M. at the Church. Entombment will be private.

Pallbearers will be Judge Beverly Beal, William Hood, Jr., David Moore, Chris Shook, Steven Baker, and Rick Rash.
