Sarah was born March 22, 1933 in Johnson City, Tennessee to the late John Clifford Howren and Golden
Brown Howren. She was a graduate of Science Hill High School and East Tennessee State University.
Sarah was a longtime educator in the Caldwell County School system, where she taught special needs
children at Davenport School in Lenoir. She valued education and was committed to ensuring that her
students succeeded by providing a nurturing, caring environment. She was a mentor and example to
others through her selfless dedication to all children. She believed everyone deserves an education and
dedicated herself to that pursuit. She taught her family that all people are created equal in the eyes of
God and treated all people with equal dignity and respect.
Sarah’s greatest loves were for her family and her Church. She was affectionately known as Mimi to her
grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a longtime member of the First United Methodist
Church of Lenoir and supported the church faithfully throughout the years, nourishing her spirit weekly
in the fellowship of the congregation. She attended hundreds of her children’s and grandchildren’s
soccer, baseball, basketball, and football games; wrestling and tennis matches; golf tournaments, swim
meets, recitals and plays. She also never missed a telecast of a UNC Basketball or Atlanta Braves game!
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Hawkins, Jr, her daughter Amy Hawkins Pope, infant
son Matthew Hawkins, brother John Howren Jr, and sister Anna Katherine Howren Trivette.
She is survived by her son Ralph Hawkins III and spouse Amy Hawkins of Atlanta, Ga, daughter Beth
Hawkins Jones and spouse Darrell Jones of Lenoir, NC, son John Hawkins and spouse Jill Hawkins of
Asheville, NC, and sister Reta Davis of Atlanta, Ga.
In addition to her children, her legacy lives on in her grandchildren Matthew Hawkins and spouse
Rosalie Hawkins of Atlanta, Ga; Lily Hawkins and Caroline Hawkins of Atlanta, Ga; Joshua Jones and
spouse Jessica Jones of Granite Falls, NC; Jordan Jones and spouse Holly Jones of Granite Falls, NC;
Zachary Smith and spouse Kristina Smith of Granite Falls, NC; Luke Hawkins and Levi Hawkins of
Asheville, NC; and her great-grandchildren Alex Roten and Sylas Smith of Granite Falls, NC; Hunter
Philyaw, Sophia Jones, Millie Jones of Granite Falls, NC; Hailey Hawkins of Atlanta, Ga and Bowman
Jones of Granite Falls, NC.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the First Methodist Church of Lenoir,
Caldwell County Hospice, or Caldwell County Special Olympics.
