He was born November 20, 1935, in Wilkes County to the late James Walter Adkins and Nellie Hamby.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by wife, Zada Crump Adkins, sisters; Ann Butler, Helen Smith and Margaret Powell.
He was very family oriented and loved his family unconditionally.
He is survived by son Scott Atkins and wife Anna of Lenoir, Daughter, Sandra Auton and husband Terry of Lenoir, brother, William Atkins and wife Lucille, sister, Betty Carlton and husband Hubert, all of Lenoir, grandchildren; Michelle Bare and husband Josh of Jefferson, Misty Grant and husband Mike of Morganton, Madisen Laws of Hickory, Dustin Atkins and Kristin Atkins, both of Lenoir, great-grandchildren, Layla Bare of Jefferson and Colton Griffin of Lenoir.
A funeral service will be held at Pendry's Lenoir Funeral Home Chapel on Thursday, March 1, 2018 at 2:00 pm with Reverend Bruce Crump officiating. A visitation will be held from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm at Pendry's Lenoir Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens of Lenoir.
Serving as pallbearers will be Wayne Peacock, Shawn Gunnoe, Josh Bare, Dustin Atkins, Earl Booker and Mike Grant.
Serving as honorary pallbearer will be Tommy Carlton.
