

Zeno R. Hames, 95, of Lenoir passed away Monday, May 19, 2014 at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care of Hudson.
Mr. Hames was born in Rutherford County to the late Thomas Hendrix Hames and Docia Ella Wall Hames. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Iley Mae Dawkins Hames and his second wife, Hester Wayne Hames; a son, Dwight Edward Hames; two brothers, Samuel and Thomas Boyd Hames; two sisters, Rena Ophelia Hames Holt and Elora Carpenter. He was retired from the Southern Bell Utility Company. A proud WWII Army veteran, he fought in the Battle of Normandy, North France Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe, serving in England, France, Belgium Holland and Germany. He received the American Defense Service Medal, EAMET Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal and five Bronze Star Medals. He was a member of Lower Creek Baptist Church for 58 years where he was a member of the choir, Sunday school teacher, Deacon and was involved in the prison ministry. He was a member of the Lions Club, Pioneers of America and was Director of the Baptist Men’s of Caldwell Baptist Association and loved to work in his flower garden.
Those left to cherish his memory are his sons, Ben R. Hames and wife Karan of Hudson, Roger Hames and wife Donna Lamoureux Hames of Statesville, step-son, Buck Dawkins and wife Vickie, and Anthony Dawkins, both of Butner, NC; his daughter, Nancy Hames Coffey and husband Bruce of Lenoir; grandchildren, Ginger Crisp, David Hames, Greg Hames, Mark Hames, Karl Meissner, Jill Hames, Nita Claire Hames, Joseph Coffey and Amanda Hall, and six great grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held Thursday, May 22, 2014 at Lower Creek Baptist Church at 3:00 p.m. with Reverend Greg Hames, Reverend Jim Hamby and Reverend Mack Jarvis, III officiating. Burial will follow the service in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church prior to the service from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m.
Serving as pallbearers will be David Hames, Joseph Coffey, Nickolas Banner, Mark Kelley and Bill Terry.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests that memorials be made to Lower Creek Baptist Church, 633 Lower Creek Drive, Lenoir, NC 28645.
