Buddy started his tedious jour-ney of life on November 15, 1946, born to Erma Lee Gay and Lawrence James Mayes. His great grandmother, Lula Miles, was the midwife that delivered him at 6:30 pm that evening in Marlin, Texas. He was a hand full from that day until the Lord saw fit to bring him home to rest last Saturday, October 13, 2012.
Buddy lived in and around Marlin until his daddy (D. J. Johnson) moved the family to Amherst, Texas in 1961. He attended school in Amherst until he joined the United States Army in 1966. He was wounded twice while serving his country in Vietnam. He married Annie Lee Young in 1967. During that union they had a daughter named Norma Kay. After being discharged from the Army he lived in Dallas off and on for years. During that time he divorced and married his second wife, Bobbie Jean Davis, who he called his best friend until she passed away.
Buddy came home to help care for his mother in 2010. He soon joined One Way Church of God in Christ in Lubbock under the leadership of Elder J. T. Cotton. He was an active and hardworking member from the time he joined the church. He loved to sing in the choir and go with his sister Missionary Annie when she brought the Word. He also loved to talk with Caroline and Jr. Cimental about wrestling.
Buddy started getting sick in December of 2011. He contin-ued to go to church as long as he could. When he became too sick to be at home, he went to Lynnwood Manor and Rehab in Levelland. He received very good care from the staff, but he always told his sister, Joyce that she gave the best care and kept him soft. Buddy gave up the ghost knowing that he got it right with God.
Buddy was preceded in death by the two dads he loved: Deacon D. J. Johnson and Lawrence J. Mayes and his wife, Rebecca; his brothers: Elder D. J. Johnson, Jr., James L. Mayes, Lawrence J. Mayes and one sister: Evelyn J. Mayes.
