Nelda Louise (Alexander) Bowers, 97, of Levelland, passed away on January 24, 2018 in Levelland, TX. Family will receive friends on Saturday, January 27, 2018, from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm at George Price Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 27, 2018, at George Price Funeral Home Chapel with Michael Holster, Pastor of Second Baptist Church, officiating. Nelda Louise Bowers was born on July 14, 1920 in Sweetwater, Oklahoma the daughter of Sam and Elsie Alexander. It was there that she attended school and graduated an exceptional student at the age of 16. She and her best friend, Blanche Fowler attended Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, OK where she met and married her future husband, Rayford H. Bowers from Levelland, TX. Nelda and Rayford were married on June 19, 1940 in Clinton, OK. Shortly after they settled in Levelland, TX, Janice Raye was born on February 8, 1941. The very next year, Sherry Lynn was born on August 6, 1942. When Rayford was recruited into the U.S. Navy, Nelda and the girls moved back to Oklahoma where she finished her Bachelor’s degree in Education at Southwestern Oklahoma State University. When the war ended, Nelda returned to Levelland with her husband where she began an impressive 37-year career as an Elementary school teacher in Levelland ISD. She loved teaching third grade and spent most of her years at Capital Elementary. Besides being an outstanding teacher, Nelda was an accomplished seamstress, and master gardener. She enjoyed spending the summers in Colorado with family and friends where she loved all that nature had to offer. Nelda was an active member of the Texas Retired Teachers Association and Second Baptist Church. Nelda is preceded in death by her husband Rayford Bowers, her daughter Sherry Guthrie, her parents Samuel and Elsie Alexander, and her brothers Truman and Raymond Alexander. Nelda is survived by her daughter Janice Wells, grandchildren Steven and Kirk Altman of Levelland, Andrea Collins Zabel of Midland, and Shannon Collins Jantzen of St. Louis, MO. Great grandchildren include Collin and Brooklyn Zabel of Lubbock, Carson Zabel of Abilene, Brennan Jantzen of Austin, and Madelyn Jantzen of St. Louis, MO. Nelda’s favorite sayings included “Life is what you make of it” and “Life is worth living!” The family would like to extend a special thank you to the amazing staff and residents at Hickory Place Assisted Living in Levelland where she resided the last 5 years. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the charity of your choice. Funeral services are under the compassionate care of George Price Funeral Home.
