Born on October 14, 1949, at Old St. Mary’s Hospital in Philadelphia, Edith was a longtime resident of Bucks County/Langhorne, Pennsylvania, and a “Philly girl” at heart. She graduated from St. Boniface Grade School and St. Boniface Commercial School in Philadelphia.
Edith lived with a steady, generous compassion that showed itself in the way she noticed people, listened closely, and offered help without hesitation. She was deeply cherished by those who knew her—someone whose thoughtfulness was felt in everyday moments and whose kind-hearted presence made others feel at ease. Loyal to the core, she stood by the people she loved with unwavering devotion.
Edith worked most of her life in the Title Insurance business, beginning in the 1970s and working her way up from office clerk to settlement clerk. She knew the title business well and took pride in doing her work with care and competence.
She found joy in simple pleasures and shared them freely: bowling, gardening, dancing (especially the twist), time with family and friends, trips to the Jersey shore, watching TV, and enjoying good food. Many will remember her for baking her famous Blueberry Zucchini bread, a small but lasting expression of the warmth she brought into the lives around her.
Service to others was a meaningful part of Edith’s life. She volunteered for many years at Lower Bucks Hospital in the Short Pro Department, a place she loved and often described as family, where she formed many kind and caring friendships. She also volunteered at St. Mary’s Hospital in the Oncology Department until the pandemic. Edith truly valued volunteering and often said she received more from it than she ever gave—an outlook that reflected her thoughtful spirit and genuine care for others.
Edith was a longtime member of the Middletown Senior Center, where she enjoyed the fitness room, Chair Yoga, Reach Class, and countless luncheons. Many happy memories were made there, along with friendships that meant a great deal to her. Strong-willed and candid, she spoke her mind—even when it was not what someone wanted to hear. If others turned to “Dear Abby,” those who knew Edith knew they could turn to her for the honest truth. She was a true friend to many, and her loyalty will not be forgotten.
Edith enjoyed long lunches that could last two hours or more, and she was always ready to help anyone she felt needed her. She was blessed with kind and helpful neighbors, especially Wayne. She will be greatly missed and forever held in memory by all who loved her.
Edith was the beloved daughter of the late, James and Edith (nee Brown) Hughes. She is survived by her loving siblings, Susan Stinson, James (Karen) Hughes, Patricia Hughes, Ronald (Linda) Hughes and Elizabeth (Michael) Hanna; her nieces and nephews, Susan, Christine, Erik Alvin, James (Erica), Ryan (Jacklyn), Kyle Hughes, Amanda and Kelli Hughes, Danielle and Michael Hanna; her 6 great nieces and nephews, James, Mackenzie, Wyatt Hughes, Owen, Emma and Lennan Hughes; her beloved best friend and soulmate, Kathy Regan; her second family, all of the Regans; her cherished feline buddies, Clyde and Mittens; and so many wonderful friends.
A Memorial Gathering will be held at James J. Dougherty Funeral Home, 2200 Trenton Road, Levittown, Pennsylvania 19056, on August 25, 2026, from 8:00 am to 10:15 am.
A Memorial Mass will be held at Queen of the Universe, 2443 Trenton Rd, Levittown, Pennsylvania 19056, on August 25, 2026, at 11:00 am.
