Ed died in the home he loved which he purchased in the Pinewood section of Levittown when it was in great need of repair and which he rebuilt over the past 50 years.
Born in Philadelphia, to Dolores Armstrong Harnick (neé Heartley) and John B. Armstrong, Ed was also close to his stepparents, Gertrude Armstrong and Sidney Harnick.
After graduating from Woodrow Wilson High School, Ed studied at Bucks County Community College.
Ed was well-known locally as a truly civic-minded member of the community, who served as a member of the Tullytown Council from January 2008 – December 2016, and assisted candidates he supported in their campaigns. He was the first member of the Greenbelt Overhaul Alliance of Levittown established by Dale Frazier and ultimately became its President. His leadership resulted in the clearing of millions of pounds of tires and other waste from Levittown waterways and green spaces. Ed loved Levittown.
In addition to his interest in local politics, Ed was fascinated by international news and was an avid talk radio fan. According to Jane, Ed was a computer “geek” and still owned his original Apple Macintosh computer.
Ed was employed by Lower Bucks County Joint Municipal Authority from 1994 to 2012 and subsequently held a seat on its Board of Directors. He was a former manager for Garney Morris Electric and had a vast collection of electronics equipment and tools that he used daily. Previously he worked for a nuclear research corporation. Shortly before his death, he was studying advancements in sound wave technology.
Ed also served in the U.S. Army and was a staunch defender of civil rights.
He loved to tinker and wouldn’t hesitate to disassemble and rebuild a car. He was proud of his ’63 Pontiac Bonneville that he sold to his sister, Patty.
Ed was extremely fond of his shadows, a beautiful Pekinese named Maggie, and a feisty Peek-a-poo, Murph.
However, the greatest love of Ed’s life was his wife, Mary Jane “Jane” Carroll. Jane and Ed traveled to Ireland on their honeymoon where they had their wedding rings engraved in Gaelic “cuisle mo chroí” meaning pulse of my heart. They also took memorable cruises to the Caribbean and to Alaska where Jane horrified Ed by zip-lining across the countryside.
Other memberships and affiliations in which Ed participated include: Route 13 Study Committee, Board of Directors for Bucks County Technical High School, Bucks County Technical School Foundation for Educational Excellence, Bucks County Enterprise Committee, and the Construction Specifications Institute.
Ed is survived by his wife, (Mary) Jane Carroll; son Edmund Francis Armstrong III; sister Patricia duCoin; stepsister Jackie Valvardi; stepbrothers Joe, Chuck and Mike Glennan; 2 stepsons and 5 grandchildren.
Guests are invited to a Memorial Service in Ed’s honor on Wednesday, May 31, 2023, from 6pm until 8 pm, at the James J. Dougherty Funeral Home, 2200 Trenton Rd, Levittown, PA.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests charitable donations to the Bucks County Suicide Prevention Task Force.
