
George A. Caisse, 89, of Levittown passed away on February 8, 2011 at Saint Mary Medical Center in Langhorne. George was born in Westville, N.J. to Maurice and Marthe Caisse. After graduating from high school, he served in the CCC, and then in the Pacific theater as a medic during World War II. In 1948, he married Miriam Shapiro. They had three children. For 30 years he worked as an electrician for U.S. Steel, retiring in 1988 In high school, George entertained an interest in becoming a journalist. He had a column in the local newspaper, for which he obtained interviews with such luminaries as George M. Cohan, Benny Goodman and Cab Calloway. He was a civil rights activist and participated in the organized support of the Myers family against the harassment of the anti-integration mob after their historic 1957 move into racially segregated Levittown. George's parents were migrs from France. He spoke French and had a life long interest in languages and travel. He was an avid competitive speller and won the PA senior spelling championship as well as winning second place in a national spelling competition. More recently, he organized spelling bees at the Middletown Senior center. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Miriam (Shapiro) Caisse, daughters Michelle Caisse and Lisa Stilwell, son Michael Caisse, grandchildren Sarah and Peter Caisse, and great granddaughter Eva Stone. A memorial service celebrating the life of George Caisse will be held 1 PM on Saturday, February 19 at Middletown Friends Meeting, 452 W. Maple Ave., Langhorne, Pa. 19047.
