The second of five children, he was born on July 21, 1935 in Philadelphia to Clara (née Zanzinger) and George W. Keegan Sr. As a child he was affectionately known as "Sonny".
George grew up in Northeast Philadelphia and loved spending summers at his grandparents' farm in Upper Bucks County. He attended Abraham Lincoln High School after which he served in the U.S. Navy and the Merchant Marines.
One night at The Mayfair Diner, George met the love of his life, Rose Marie McShea and after a whirlwind romance they married in 1957. Together they raised four children: Terrance, Jennifer, George III and Nancy. They shared nearly 67 years of love, laughter and adventure together before Rose's passing in January 2024.
George worked in the construction industry as a heavy equipment operator and was a member of the Union of Operating Engineers Local 542 for 60 years. He was highly respected by his peers for his skills and strong work ethic.
George had many varied interests including duck hunting, fishing, horseback riding and gardening just to name a few. He made pickles from the cucumbers he grew, birdhouses out of gourds and even tried his hand at making wine.
He was an avid birdwatcher and was a member of the National Audubon Society. George also enjoyed traveling to Florida with Rose, taking bicycle trips with his best friend Fred, sailing and working on his boat throughout his retirement.
At the age of 40 George began pursuing his dream of building his own house. For many years he and Rose lived in their beautiful house deep in the woods with their children, dogs and horses until later retiring in Newtown, PA.
George was a perfectionist and did everything with the utmost attention to detail and quality. A hard worker, he was strong and dependable. He could talk to anyone and was always interested in learning something new. He could seem intimidating due to his large stature but nothing was further from the truth. He loved animals, nature and was creative, warm and kind. He was honest, trustworthy and a loyal friend.
A loving husband and father, George lived his life devoted to his family. With his quiet strength, low-key humor, signature suspenders and jaunty cap, he couldn't help but endear himself to everyone he met.
George is preceded in death by his beloved wife Rose, his parents, his sister Pat, and his brothers Tom and Bob.
George is survived by his four children: Terrance (Geilza), Jennifer (Tom), George (Barb) and Nancy; his grandchildren; Shana (Jakob), Ryan, Leanna (Steve), Julie, and Tom; his sister, Jeanne (Gus); as well as many nieces, nephews and dear friends.
George touched the lives of everyone who knew and met him. He will be deeply missed.
A Celebration of Life will be held at James J. Dougherty Funeral Home, Inc., located at 2200 Trenton Rd, Levittown, Pennsylvania, 19056 on Friday, December 5, 2025. The visitation will take place from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm, followed by a memorial service at 5:00pm.
