Gertrude N. Atkinson

Gertrude N. Atkinson passed away on May 30, 2025, in Poughkeepsie, NY, at the age of 92. A lifelong resident of Bucks County, Gertrude spent her final 15 years in Poughkeepsie, surrounded by the warmth of her daughter's home.

Gertrude dedicated her life to her family as a devoted homemaker. She took on odd jobs through the years but thrived in her role as a mother, which was her true passion. Gertrude was the beloved wife of Garland Atkinson, with whom she shared 56 wonderful years of marriage. Their love story began unexpectedly at a local bar while watching a boxing match, Garland had just the right hook to knock her heart right out of the ring.

A beach lover with sand in her shoes and a Springsteen tune on her lips, Gertrude was a frequent visitor of the Parx Casino and Atlantic City slots. She shuffled through life with a deck of cards in one hand—rummy, poker, setback—and a bingo dauber in the other.

Gertrude is survived by her children: Garland, James "Jim" (Claire), and Nancy (Bill) Rubel, along with her 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren, who will carry on her legacy of love, laughter, and the occasional bluff. She was preceded in death by her husband, Garland, marking a profound loss in her life.

Gertrude's legacy is carried on through the large, loving family she nurtured, her enduring friendships, and the countless memories at the beach, around card tables, and under the summer concert lights listening to her favorite music. Her life was a testament to the joy of simple pleasures and the deep bonds of family.

A visitation for Gertrude will be held Monday, June 2, 2025 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at James J. Dougherty Funeral Home, 2200 Trenton Rd, Levittown, Pennsylvania 19056. Following the visitation will be a burial at at Sunset Memorial Park, 333 County Line Rd, Huntingdon Valley, Pennsylvania 19006.
