

Born in Philadelphia, Mr. Owens is from the Olney section of the city and graduated from North Catholic High School. He has lived in Levittown since 1956 and was a parishioner of Queen of the Universe church in Levittown PA.
Beloved husband of the late Mary for over 50 years, he was the loving father of Sharon M., Brian J. (Todd), Sheila A. Brosilow (Alan), Noreen M., Justin F. (William), Susan E. Schumann (Mark), Joseph J., Jr. and Maryrose T. and was the devoted grandfather of Sara Schumann, Jenna Yazaki (Oscar), Gregory Schumann and Victoria Brosilow. Loved great grandfather to 5 great grandchildren. Taiga, Carter, Hunter, Sansa, Chase.
Mr. Owens was a Korean War Veteran serving in the United States Air Force and traveled extensively including England, Greenland and Morocco. He worked for the Department of Defense for 35 years. After early retirement, he worked at Bucks County Technical High School for 7 years and part time at Neshaminy High School for several years.
Joseph led a full and active retirement. He was a dedicated volunteer for Middletown Township "Meals On Wheels" which he started to do with his wife Mary and continued to do it after her death. He volunteered for the program for a total of 18 years . He also volunteered at St. Francis Inn in Kensington every Wednesday for 14 years working alongside his son Justin helping to serve meals. He served as a Eucharistic Minister for 11 years visiting parishoners in their homes and also at Statesmans Nursing home and St. Mary Medical Center. He was also a frequent volunteer for the St. Vincent DePaul truck. He also attended daily mass for many years.
Traveling with his wife Mary, after retirement brought him back to England where he met distant cousins of the Owens family and then to Ireland where he visited the Owens farm and the Nugent farm (his grandmother's home) in County Tyrone, N. Ireland. He formed long lasting friendships with these cousins especially Bernadette "Barney" McGurn and Mary Owens. Joe also loved vacationing in Longboat Key Florida every summer for over 20 years where he and Mary would spend time with his daughter Sheila and her family and he would often bring grandchildren and children along for a visit.
He will also be remembered for his devotion to his faith, his love of flowers, his love of music, his frequent visits and drives through Core Creek Park and for being an intense follower of the Notre Dame Football Team for as long as anyone can remember.
Family and friends are invited to call on Wednesday, April14, 2021 from 10:00 until 11:00 am at Queen of the Universe Church, 2443 Trenton Road, Levittown, where his funeral mass will be celebrated at 11:00 am. Burial will be private with immediate family only.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Francis Inn, 2441 Kensington Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19125.
