Born in 1925 in Chicago, he served his country honorably during World War II as a tail gunner flying missions in a B29 as part of the Army Air Corp. He was a history teacher in the Philadelphia public school system for 32 years and after retirement spent a great deal of time tutoring students in ESL and helping those with special needs in reading and writing at Council Rock.
Additionally, Leonard volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and was involved in the reconstruction of the historic Schofield Ford Covered Bridge at Tyler State Park.
A talented writer, Leonard was a sports columnist for the Bucks County Courier Times and an avid writer of poetry and short stories. He was a devoted husband and loving father, and grandfather. A true renaissance man, Leonard will be dearly missed by his loved ones and all those whose lives he has touched.
Leonard is predeceased by his brother Mortimer and sister Miriam.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Floss; his sons, Marty and Randy (Alexis); his daughter Ellen (John); and his grandchildren, Amelia and Ethan.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Special Olympics.
A burial with full military honors for Leonard will be held Tuesday, April 2, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Washington Crossing National Cemetery, 830 Highland Road, Newtown, Pennsylvania 18940.
