Russ was born in Youngstown, Ohio to parents Elizabeth (Reindl) and Howard Crawford. He grew up in Erie, Pennsylvania, graduating from McDowell High School in 1958. He followed that by joining the Army, and served from 1958 to 1961. Russ continued his education, graduating from Bucks County Community College with a degree in Associate of Arts: Chemistry. Russ went on to establish a career as a chemist, working for Degussa-Hüls for over 15 years.
Russ loved golfing and in his later years would often play two rounds a day at Middletown Country Club. He also enjoyed home theater equipment and worked at Circuit City for several years, “getting paid to play” as he described it. For most of his life Russ cheered on the New York Giants football team and regularly watched NFL games. He was also a member of the American Legion Hall 148, occasionally attending meetings.
Russ grew up on a dairy farm, sharing stories of hard work and fun times. He had no siblings so all of the responsibilities fell upon him to feed and milk the cows each day. When he wasn’t tending his chores, Russ rode horses and raced cars with friends. His fondness for cars, motorcycles, and speedy driving carried through adulthood. He was known to have a lead foot and quick reflexes on the roadway. His favorite vehicles were the pair of Pontiac Bonnevilles that he owned in succession over a period of 36 years.
Russ was three times divorced. He is survived by his four sons Chris (Mil), Eric (Jenn), Doug, and Sean as well as his grandchildren Angel, Jordan, and Chase.
A burial with full military honors for Russell will be held Monday, January 13, 2025 at 9:30 AM at Washington Crossing National Cemetery, 830 Highland Road, Newtown, Pennsylvania 18940.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Russ’ name may be made to Folds of Honor, a charity that he has supported.
