Scott was born in Sewickley, Pennsylvania to Mary Jane (Carmack) and Eugene Horton in Sewickley, PA. He went to Ambridge Area High School and graduated in 1988. He studied welding and graduated from San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton, California in 1991.
He moved from Stockton, California to Middletown, PA where he met his loving and devoted wife Ingrid (Hogeland) in 1994. They were married on December 9, 1995 and have been together since. They were celebrating their 28th year of marriage, or as Ingrid says “You might as well just round it up to 30!”.
He worked for East Coast Signs in Bristol, PA as a major sign installer for 17 years. In those years he was able to travel to 42 states installing signs for major corporations, all while making sure to get his family souvenirs from every state. He even traveled twice to Alaska where he saw the northern lights. During these years he was away more than he was home, sacrificing his time with his family. Scott had installed so many signs that his family couldn't go anywhere without him saying, “Hey look I installed that sign, it’s still holding up… Of course”. He said this especially when his family would go to games at the Eagles stadium- “The Home of The Pigeons” as Scott would call it, or while driving by it on I-95 in Philadelphia. He loved sharing the story of the time he helped put up the big red letters on the outside of the stadium that read “Lincoln Financial Field”.
Even though he was a master of his trade in the union sign business, in 2013, he decided to open his own business: Best-N-Bucks, as a personal contractor. He kept busy running his business all the way up until his last day with us. His motto was that if it needed to be fixed, he could do it. No job was too big or too small. He took pride in doing the best work for his clients, who he treated as if they were his own family. His work was personal to him, and he would go to the ends of the Earth if it meant he was able to help one of his clients.
Scott was known for bringing the younger generation under his wing and treating them as if they were his own. His character truly embodied hospitality. Jeremy and “his boys” will miss their “second dad”, as he would graciously welcome “all of Neshaminy high school” over his home every weekend without a blink of an eye. Scott gave the best advice. He lived more life than most have in his short time with us. As he would say, “The days go slow but the years go fast. Appreciate what you have now. Because in the blink of an eye, you'll be old like me, looking back at the dumb shit I used to do…” We are fortunate to forever carry his words of wisdom and stories of the past with us in our hearts.
Sports were a huge part of Scott’s life. Being from Pittsburgh, he was obviously a die hard Steelers and Penguins fan. His sister Kimberly is a Penn State alumni and PSU football has been his favorite ever since. Rarely would you find him not wearing a PSU hat. However, after many years living in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia, he would root for the Eagles… As long as they weren't playing the Steelers. He even loved watching the Sixers. Scott would talk with anyone about sports, especially if it meant trashing the Cowboys. Scott loved bonding with his mother over their favorite teams, and he made sure to call her every game to make sure that she had the right channel on her TV.
Scott cherished quality time with his friends. For the past eighteen years many good times were spent at Penn Warner Lake in Morrisville, PA. The Horton’s have spent countless weekends there fishing, making (way too big) campfires, playing horseshoes, boat rides, grilling, and sharing laughs. Scott always looked forward to his Friday night poker nights with boys. He always made sure to have a batch of his “Famous Horton margaritas'' ready for them when they came over, made from the at-home margarita machine. We’re sure he would say “they were just tired of me kicking their ass every week, I guess my win streak had to take a break”. A perfect day for Scott would be a relaxing day on the beach with a drink and Backwood in hand. That’s why visiting his cousins in Florida with Ingrid were some of his best memories, every day in Florida with them was absolutely perfect.
He is survived by his wife Ingrid, daughter Miranda, and son Jeremy. He is also survived by his loving mother Mary Jane Lee, older sister Kimberly (David Underwood), nephew Kyle Underwood. Scott was blessed with fourteen nieces and nephews who knew him as their Uncle Scott, as well as nine great nieces and nephews, as well as his best friend Michael Roza, who is like an uncle to the Horton family.
Scott will forever live on through the wonderful memories he shared with each person that he touched in his life. No matter how long it has been, Scott would pick up with anyone like no time has passed. That is how his family imagines it will be when they meet again one day. All of those who knew Scott were lucky to have known him and shared a laugh.
“The next place that I go will be as peaceful and familiar as a sleepy summer Sunday and a sweet, untroubled mind. I will travel empty-handed. There is not a single thing I have collected in my life that I would ever want to bring except… The love of those who loved me, and the warmth of those who cared. The happiness and memories and magic that we shared, though I will know the joy of solitude… I'll never be alone. I'll be embraced by all the family and friends I've ever known. I will cherish all the friendship I was fortunate to find, all the love and all the laughter in the place I leave behind. All these good things will go with me in the next place that I go” - Warren Hanson.
Join the Horton family in a celebration of life service at James J. Dougherty Funeral Home Inc. 2200 Trenton Rd. Levittown, PA 19056 on Saturday May 20th, 2023 from 11am-1pm. This day will be filled with shared memories and laughter.
If Scott were there, we know Ingrid would have to force him to “change into something nice” rather than his go-to camouflage Crocs and bright yellow Steelers jersey.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Horton’s GoFundMe fundraiser to aid in the unexpected funeral arrangement costs and financial burdens… https://gofund.me/26d97397
