Antoine Aime Grenier

Tony Grenier passed away peacefully at home with Pauline, his wife of 67 years, by his side. Even through a long illness, his adventurous spirit and easy cheerfulness never left him.

Born in Lewiston, Maine to Antoine and Lea (Perrault) Grenier, Tony graduated from Saint Dominic Regional High School in 1954.

A believer in physical fitness and self-reliance from a young age, Tony enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving as a paratrooper with the 11th Airborne, completing 24 jumps over the course of his service. While stationed in Germany, he played baseball — the sport he'd love his whole life — on the Regiment team, alongside fellow soldiers fulfilling their military obligations before heading off to the Majors.

Tony met his wife, Pauline, in the third grade at Holy Cross School. In a moment that would prove more meaningful than either of them knew at the time, he walked her down the aisle at their eighth-grade graduation — years before he'd do it again, this time as her husband, when they married in 1959.

In 1958, Tony joined the Lewiston Police Department, where he built a career marked by steady dedication and leadership. He served as police school liaison officer before rising to Sergeant and later Lieutenant, heading the Youth Bureau. Along the way, he set an example not only for the officers around him, but for his community and his family.

In retirement, Tony returned to a hobby he loved — carpentry — lovingly building cabinets and furniture by hand. A lifelong learner, he was also a voracious reader and a lover of music.

Above all, Tony passed on his love of adventure, the outdoors, travel, and sport to his family and the many friends who came to share his circle. Whether he was camping at Hermit Island, fly fishing (always catch and release) at Nesowadhunk, or patrolling the slopes as a member of the National Ski Patrol — where he earned Senior status and served for 22 years at Lost Valley, Sunday River, and Evergreen Valley — Tony was rarely far from the outdoors he loved. After retiring, he and Pauline set off by camper for Alaska, later traveled through Europe, and spent winters in Florida and Gulf Shores, Alabama. He shared many adventures with his late brother, Robert Henry Grenier (Constance), his late sister-in-law Janine Lauze (Laurier), and his sister Pauline Couture (late Norm)

Tony is survived by his wife, Pauline; his children, William (Georgina) Grenier, Céleste (Anthony) Lilore, Diane (Marc) Blais, Susan Grenier, and Marie (Michael) Levinsky; his seven grandchildren, Adam, Hannah, Raymond (Katie), Josh (Megan), Madeline, Vaughn, and Isabelle; his three great-grandchildren, Skye, Acadia, and Henrik; and his sister, Pauline Couture.

Tony's visitation will be held at The Fortin & Pinette Group, 305 Alfred A. Plourde Parkway, Lewiston, ME 04240, on September 3, 2026, from 10:00 am to 11:30 am. A Memorial Service will follow at the same location immediately after, beginning at 11:30 am. Tony's committal service will follow at Mt Hope Cemetery, Lewiston, where he will receive military honors.
