Born in 1927 in Howland Maine, Cecile grew up with hard working values of Northern Maine. Her life was defined by a trail blazing spirit; she answered the call to serve her country by joining the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Her time in the military remained a great source of pride throughout her life, reflecting her courage and commitment to others. One of the highlights of her life was her trip on Honor Flight to Washington, DC with fellow Maine veterans. Cecile was well known for her skilled hands and generous heart. An avid quilter, she spent countless hours creating beautiful quilts which she donated to various organizations throughout the state, ensuring others felt the warmth of her care. Her commitment to her fellow veterans was unwavering; she was a devoted member of
the Franco-American War Veterans and spent many years supporting the mission of AMVETS Lunn-Hunnewell Post 6 in New Gloucester. She will be remembered as a pioneer of her generation- a woman of humor, strength and independence who left the world a warmer place through her service and her art.
She was survived by her sister, Blanche Mills; her niece, Karen Long; her nephew, Dennis Mills; great-nephew, Timothy Mills; and great-niece, Brittany Mills. She also leaves behind her two close friends Rollie and Joan Heckethorn.
A celebration of Cecile’s life with military honors will be held at the
Veterans Cemetery in Augusta on June 11, 2026 at 2 pm. In her memory, donations may be made to AMVETS Post 6 or a veterans’ organization of your choice.
