Connie first made an impression as a generous customer way back in my years a paperboy; she always left a weekly tip and a card at Christmas, and, one year, there was even a gift of a 6-pack of Coca-cola in the classic glass bottles. But it was not until many years later that she began working as a gallery attendant at the Bates Museum of Art that I really started to know her. Connie loved her job with us, and she was exceptionally reliable. She took it upon herself to get more visitors into the museum by opening our door and beckoning those on campus tours to come in to enjoy the shows. We all came to appreciate--and respect!--Connie's sardonic wit, which she deployed with relish. Even after she retired from her job with us, she livened up our annual holiday staff party when she could attend. We'll miss her.
