

AUBURN - H. Gordon Howard 85, a resident of 37 Delcliff Lane, Lewiston died Wednesday afternoon, September 16th at the Hospice House following a brief illness with his family by his side. He was born on March 21, 1924 in Auburn, Maine, the son of Allen W. and Harriette (Graham) Howard. He was the fifth of six children. He received his education in the public school system and graduated from Edward Little High School, and received his B.A. in Economics from Bates College. He held management positions in the New England Telephone Co. and TEK Bearing Inc., then was a commercial lighting sales representative for Northeast Manufacturer’s Associates and finally for his own enterprise, the Gordon Howard Agency. On September 9, 1950, Gordon was united in marriage to Jane Goff. They raised two children, Lisa and Kevin. He was a veteran of the Second World War, serving in the U.S. Army from February 1943 to March 1945. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Church of Lewiston. Gordon’s interests included reading, antiques, classical music, history and current events, and he enjoyed spending time working on home improvement projects. Active in the Masonic Fraternity, he was a 50 Year Member of Ancient Brothers Lodge No. 178, A.F. & A.M. of Auburn, and served as Worshipful Master. He continued as an active member of his Lodge and served as Chaplain for several years. Gordon was a 50 Year Member and Past High Priest of Bradford Royal Arch Chapter and was a District Deputy Grand High Priest for the Grand Chapter of Maine. He was a member and Past Master of Dunlap Council, Royal and Select Masters, and a member and Past Commander of Lewiston Commandery, Knights Templar, where he also served as Prelate for many years. Gordon was a Past Sovereign of Eusebius Conclave, Knights of the Red Cross of Constantine of Auburn, and for several years an officer in the Grand Imperial Council of the Red Cross of Constantine of Maine. He was Eminent Preceptor of Cross and Crown Tabernacle, a member of the Past Officers Association of Maine, and of Pine Tree Priory, Knights of the York Cross of Honour of Maine. He was currently serving as a Trustee for the Auburn Masonic Association. Gordon was predeceased by his parents, his wife, the former Jane Goff in 2003, his sisters Inez Bragdon, Frances Howard and Priscilla Waterhouse, and brothers Allen Howard Jr. and Robert Howard. Surviving are his daughter Lisa Howard of Lewiston, a son Kevin Howard and his wife Rebecca and special granddaughter Elizabeth of Acton, MA; a sister-in-law, Betty Howard of San Bernardino, California; a brother-in-law, Raymond Waterhouse of Poland Maine, special nieces Joanne Badger, Gloria Goddard, Marilee Shaw and June Fritz, and also several other nieces and nephews. HOWARD died in Auburn, September 16, 2009, Mr. H. Gordon Howard age 85 years a resident of Lewiston. Funeral; services honoring Gordon's life will be celebrated MONDAY 11:00AM at the Pinette & Lynch Funeral Home with Reverend Joseph Daniels presiding. Both Catholic and Masonic committal prayers to follow concluding with United States Army military honors at Mt. Hope Cemetery.
