I took Mr Jones' chemistry class in 1971 and was sure that I would not do well in this class. I had thought that chemistry would be very hard for me to understand, not to mention that I had no interest whatsoever. Mr. Jones was a great teacher and all he had to do was look at me and knew that I "didn't get it." So, he would explain it in a differnet way and I was able to understand. I passed that course and am very grateful for my teacher.Of all the teachers that I had through all my years at EL, it was my favorite one and pretty much the only one that I remember well.His family should be very proud of all his work with children through his years of teaching. The last time I saw Harry Jones was at my ELHS 25th.1954 Class reuion, he was a special guest as he came to EL the same year my class did 1952.Harry Jones was a great teacher, he taught my Science class in the old section of EL by the staircase.He will always be remembered by all of us.

MR. JONES WAS A VERY WONDERFUL PERSON.HE USE TO COME INTO CVS TO SEE ME IN THE PHARMACY. Both Harry and Pat were great teachers. I had the benefit of knowing them, through my friend Mark. So many wonderful gourmet dinners at the Jones's family table,(I didn't know what gourmet was back then...I was a silly teenager from Lewiston ) there was always lively conversation, laughter, interesting people, new foods, broadway show tunes playing in the background, wonderful scents emanating from the tiny kitchen, and Mr. Jones towering over the entire spectacle with his steely blue eyes. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to you all, the Jones family, especially Mark. I would love to hear from you... it has been a long time. I saw Harry on his birthday and then on the 2nd just before he died. I had told him it would be a few weeks before I could get in to visit with him again due to my schedule, so I did not realize he died until the next time I went in, which was at the end of the month. I will miss him! I very much enjoyed my weekly visits with Harry. He was always fun to talk to and always had some interesting perspective to input in whatever topic we discussed. I am also very greatful for the tutoring he gave me to get through my chemistry class a few years ago. My sincerest sympathy to each of you, Peter, Mark, Susan and Nancy.

I will always remember Mr. Jones as the chaperon along with his lovely wife on the 1957 Class Trip to New York City and Washington D.C.I remember giving Mr Jones a Photo of himself at the 50th Class Reunion in 2008.His Professionalism and Dedication in all his undertaking will last with me forever.Sincerely, Carlton Valcourt

My deepest sympathy to all of Mr. Jones family and friends. Mr. jones was my favorite teacher at E.L. i was sorry to hear of his passing. He was a great guy.

Harry was the drillmaster when I was a majorette from 1956-1958. My fondest memories of those three years are when I was head majorette. Then I got to know him and work closely with him. During one marching practice, which wasn't up to his standards, he said to me "Tell the band that if they don't shape up, I'm going home". Of course after that we all did our best. You could hear a pin drop. What a thrill it was to be part of such a great marching band under his guidance!I also worked at various playgrounds when he was the director. It is hard to believe that Harry has passed on. While I thought he would live forever, having seen him several time over the past several years, at Schooner Estates, I was in awe of how well he was doing, despite his obvious disabilities! But, as always, he never showed any emotion except acceptance and joy that you were there to spend time with him. He always asked about others whom we both knew and wanted his best passsed on to them.As head of the Auburn Parks & Rec. Dept., he gave me my first fulltime job as life guard when I was 13. I worked there for 5 years. He also taught me chemistry and physics. I have MANY stories about this man who was and will always be so very special and important to me.I will miss him deeply, which reflects how he touched me and helped shape my choices and my life. He was, and is, an inspiration in MANY ways.My world and the one around all of us, is so much the better for Harry's. And, now Heaven will likewise benefit.He continues in my thoughts and prayers as does his family.A long scheduled and important medical appointment prevents me from physically being at the memorial service. Bill and I admired and respected Harry. I was a majorette in the band in the late 50's. He was such a terrific drill master. Everyone performed so well because he was in charge. I also babysat for his little girls and was so impressed by his family. He will be missed.

I had Mr. Jones as a Science teacher and as a drill instructor in the ELHS band (1956 -1958). Under the musucal direction of Donald Gay and the drill instruction of Mr.Jones the marching band got top ratings all over New England wherever it competed. His dedication to his students both in the class room and on the drill field provided a positve influence to all that knew him. It was great to see him at the class of 1958 50th reunion in 2008 . Harry was a friend of my brother, John May. We lived on Conut Ave.in Auburn. I was very young, probably 5 or 6 years old.My brother and several friends were sitting on the front steps of our house when I fell on the sidewalk and hurt myself. Harry rushed down and picked me up and took me into the house. I have never forgotten him and thought he was the most wonderful person in the world. I did meet him after the war and he was just as handsome and nice as I had remembered him.Carroll May Charron

Harry Jones always greeted his students with the biggest smile and those sparkly blue eyes welcoming them to his Chemistry class. I was one of the many fortunate "student recipients" of these greetings. He provided me with the inspiration to return to the field of education and will be fondly remembered in my heart always. I have such warm and positive memories of time spent with Mr Jones and the family. He played a big influence in my younger years and all of it was positive. I was blessed to have been able to be part of their family for so many years and wish the family well in mourning their loss. He was a tremendous influence to so many. May your thoughts turn quickly to the positive things he had done for so many and for so many years. My thoughts and love go out to the whole family.
