He was born in Portland to Richard Douglas and Mary Susan Cail.
Her loved trucks and had many adventures working for Merrill Transport, H&H Rigging and H.B. Fleming before becoming owner/operator of H.D. Cail Trucking. He also worked for the City of Portland Public Works for years and held many positions. The City once gave him a commendation for assisting an officer in crisis.
He was a member of the Corner Stone Masonic Lodge 216 like many family members and completed his 32nd degree.
Herb retired with a disability in 2001 but continued to work on cars, trucks, mowers – anything with a motor. He shared his skills with anyone who asked him.
He collected friends like he collected trucks - always saw the good in them under the rusty exterior.
After growing up in Portland he settled in Lisbon to have a quiet life where your neighbors were right next door or down the street. He knew friends of friends and his circle grew even wider.
He will be remembered for his love of family, life-long friends and his regular tailgate conversations.
He is survived by his wife Lori of 21 years and her children April Sheen, Adam and Kimberly McFarland. His surrogate son John and wife Sheryl Swiger. Grandchildren Savannah, Alyssa, Aliyah and Dylan. His sisters Cynthia and husband Roger Doiron, Lorraine Beaulieu and partner James Johnstone, and Susan Cail, brother Richard and wife Lynn Cail, surrogate brother Charles and wife Tonya Doughty. His many nieces and nephews.
