May 30, 1931February 14, 2021

On February 14, 2021, Joanna F. Walsh-Ward left this world for her eternal reward. She was born May 30, 1931, to Francis A. and Louise M. Walsh in Caribou, Maine. Joanna passed away at St. Mary’s d’Youville from cancer after almost a year’s stay. Heartfelt thanks to the staff there for their devoted care of Joanna.

She earned a B.S. degree in Elementary Education and a Masters degree in Library Science from the University of Maine at Orono, having also attended Simmons College. She worked as a librarian at the University of Maine at Orono and as a teacher in the Caribou area for many years.

Joanna was a devout Catholic who took her faith very seriously. She was a daily communicant and served as a Eucharistic Minister, lector, choir member and religious education teacher. She would provide transportation for the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary and she volunteered at St. Mary’s Hospital and d’Youville Pavilion.

She was predeceased by her brother Allison Anthony Walsh, her sisters Margaret Walsh Mason and Frances Walsh Saavedra, her grandson Frank James Ward and a cousin Phyllis McCormick.

She is survived by her sons, Robin (wife Theresa) of Florida and Mark (wife Sun) and her granddaughter Jenny Christina Ward of Virginia, sister-in-law Virginia Ward of Texas and two nieces, Frances Louise Walsh Andersen and Katherine Anne Walsh, both of Texas, and fellow Prince of Peace parishioners and friends. The family is most grateful to the dedication of Maurice and Diane Theriault, who assisted and cared for Joanna over the years.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated for Joanna at Holy Cross Church by her former pastor of Caribou and Lewiston, Msgr. Rene Mathieu, on Saturday, February 20 at 11 a.m. Prince of Peace parishioners and friends and acquaintances of Joanna are invited to attend in accordance with Covid-19 safety protocols. The funeral Mass will be live-streamed on the Prince of Peace Parish website. Internment will take place in the spring at Holy Rosary cemetery in Caribou, Maine.

In remembrance of Joanna, donations can be made to St. Dominic Academy.

I was raised on the same small-town street where Joanna, Robin and Mark lived. And I have the best of memories of playing in their yard. I can hear my mother and Joanna talking. - Joanna’s manner of communication was always serene and comforting. My condolences.
