

He was born in Webster, ME on November 23, 1939 a son of the late Edward I. & Florence (Smith) Gayton Sr. John, one of twenty children, grew up in Sabattus, attending local area schools, while also working on the family’s dairy farm.
John, along with his wife started Gayton’s Welding Inc. and in 1993 his son and namesake joined the company until his retirement. He also volunteered for the Sabattus Fire Department, earning the rank of Captain. He retired after twenty four years of service.
He served as the President of the Sabattus Mountaineer’s Snow Mobile Club. He and his wife where members of the Good Sam’s Club Gypsy Division. He was an avid bowler, with three perfect games to his credit. He also enjoyed wrestling, horseshoes and NASCAR.
Besides his wife, he is survived by three children Isabelle Mae Dennis of Norfolk, VA, Julia A. Blythe of Wilton, ME and John L. Gayton Jr and his wife Tammie of Lewiston, his five grandchildren Amanda Saunders, Joshua Gayton, Zachary Gayton, Courtney O’Donnell and her husband Richard and Abby Gayton and ten great grandchildren. He also leaves a sister Sheila Lavallee of Lisbon and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation on Thursday September 19, 2024 from 5 – 7 pm at Pinette, Dillingham & Lynch Funeral Home, 305 Alfred A. Plourde Parkway, Lewiston. A funeral service will follow at 7 pm at the funeral home. Burial will be held on Friday September 27, 2024 at 1 pm at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Sabattus.
