Katsue Teruya Kenny

TURNER – Katsue Kenny 84, died peacefully at home in her sleep on August 23, 2026. She was born in Tinian Island, territory of the United States, on February 26, 1942, to Seiko and Akiko Teruya. She married Joseph Kenny in May of 1965.

As innocent civilians, Katsue and her father survived the World War II Battle of Okinawa (April-June 1945) by hiding in a cave. Her mother and infant brother perished along with tens of thousands of other Okinawans.

Katsue persevered through many hardships and struggles during her early years. Through it all she created a wonderful life and loving family in the United States. As a military family they moved frequently living in Georgia, Virginia, and North Carolina. After her husband’s retirement, they moved to Ashland, Maine, where she enjoyed working during the potato harvest.

She and her three sons visited family members in Okinawa just weeks prior to her passing. The highlight for her was visiting with over 50 family members and friends. Katsue was loved by all. She also enjoyed visiting the Shuri Temple and the Okinawan Freedom Memorial.

Katsue was predeceased by her husband, parents, two brothers, and a sister.

She is survived by her three sons, James Kenny and wife Laurie of Rolesville, NC, John Kenny of Turner, ME, Thomas Kenny and wife Melanie of Exeter, RI; five grandchildren, Melissa Kenny and husband Mike Rivera of Wake Forest, NC, Colby Kenny and wife Sarah of Knightdale, NC, John Jacques Kenny of Exeter, RI, Charlotte and Parker Kenny both of Exeter, RI; great-grandchildren Elysia, Everly, Julian, and Leo. She is also survived by a large extended family in Okinawa including her five brothers, their spouses, nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and a great-great niece, two uncles, and an aunt.

Katsue’s graveside service will be held on Monday October 5th at 1:00PM, at Maine Veterans Cemetery, 163 Mt. Vernon Road, Augusta.
