Born in Lewiston, Maine on May 6, 1924 on Hillcrest Street, Lionel attended Holy Cross School and Lewiston High School. Growing up Lionel worked with his father on their land to grow food for the family where he attained his lifelong love of gardening.
He began working at W.S. Libby mill in 1941 before being drafted into the Army in 1942. He served in the European theater as a tank gunner with the Battery A 399th Field Artillery Battalion for 4 years, returning home in 1946. He was very proud of his service and enjoyed sharing his many experiences with his family and friends.
He returned to work at W.S. Libby, moving up through positions until his retirement when he was the superintendent of the mill.
He married Bernadette Jalbert on April 30, 1950. Together they raised a family of 5 sons and made a happy home for them. They were married for 54 years until her death in 2004.
He enjoyed many pursuits: gardening, water skiing, bowling, reading, hunting, playing cards, and traveling. Of all his pursuits the one that brought him so much joy was dancing.
Lionel's greatest love was his family. He was always ready to listen, advise and help in any way he could. His strength, humor, courage and acceptance will always be a part of all his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends.
