

LEWISTON – Pauline H.Gardner 94, a resident of Main Street Lewiston died unexpectedly Tuesday evening at her residence. She was born in Berwick July 15, 1917, the daughter of Kirk and Annie (MacKay) Harriman. She was educated in Berwick schools and graduated from Berwick High School in 1935. She attended the Trull Nursing School in Biddeford where she earned her degree as a Registered Nurse with her first duty at Goodal Hospital in Sanford. She further studied psychiatric nursing in Ashville, NC. In December 1942, Pauline was commissioned 2nd Lt., in the Army Nurse Corps with her first US duty was in Houlton, Me. She then was transferred for foreign duty in Wales and France at the height of the European Campaign during World War II. While in Europe, she visited parts of France, Switzerland, and Italy. In February 1946 she separated from the Army Nurse Corp as 1st. Lt. then returned to civilian nursing. Pauline attended the University of Maine in Orono where she met her future husband also a GI Bill student. In the summer of 1948, she married Camille Gardner and moved to Philadelphia where her husband was a veterinary student. In 1950, her first child Ann was born in Philadelphia. Upon her husband’s graduation they returned to Sanford then Lewiston, Me. During her life in Maine, Nancy, Carlton Gardner, and Patricia were born. Pauline’s life was filled as a wife, mother, and business partner in their veterinarian practice. She enjoyed traveling, to Alaska twice, many National Ski Association meetings, Hawaii, fishing, camping, and trekking through the woods. Children were her favorite pleasures especially infants. Her eyes and smile glowed as she held and cuddled them. Survivors include her husband, Dr. Camille Gardner, daughters, Nancy G. Smith and Patricia G. Morgan, a son Carlton Gardiner and five grandchildren, Daniel, Caitlin,and Shannon Morgan as well as Sarah and Laura Gardner. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by a daughter, Ann, a brother, Edward Harriman, and a sister, Marguerite Ackerman. She will be missed. Committal with military honors to be held Tuesday 10:00AM at the Maine Veteran’s Cemetery Chapel Mt. Vernon Rd., Augusta.
