He was born in Lewiston, the son of Norman and Ruth (Pendleton) Small. Educated in Auburn schools, Pete graduated from Edward Little High School in 1965, the Auburn Maine School of Commerce in 1967, and received a B.S. Degree in Business Administration at Husson College where he majored in finance and accounting.
After college, Pete began his career with Depositors Trust Company as a branch manager. In 1981 he joined Androscoggin Bank as assistant vice president and branch manager and later became vice president and director of human resources. After his banking career ended he worked as a team leader at Bell Atlantic and Verizon. He went on to spend a number of years with the Lewiston School Department as a substitute teacher.
Pete married the former Donna McGuire on August 16, 1969. Donna passed away in 1999. During their earlier years, he and Donna enjoyed taking cruises and traveling to many places throughout the US and Canada. During their quieter times they entertained around the pool, played golf, and gardened.
After Donna’s passing, Pete enjoyed theatre shows at Maine State Music Theatre, Community Little Theatre, and The Public Theatre. He enjoyed motorcycle riding to rallies in Laconia, Daytona, and Sturgis- as well as many other places throughout the northeast.
Pete is survived by his cousins Diane Crandall of North Berwick and Mark Pendleton of Auburn, sisters in law Jeanne and Jane, brothers in law Normand and Steve, nieces Pamela, Cheryl, Allison, and Robin, and nephews Peter, Davyn, and Scott and their spouses; as well as a number of grand nieces and nephews and a few great grand nieces and nephews.
Pete was predeceased by his parents, his wife Donna, his brother Jeffrey, brothers in law Don and Michael, and sisters in law Mary and Coreen, as well as numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
The family would like to thank the staff at d’Youville Pavilion and Andwell Hospice for their care and compassion. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Andwell Health Partners in Lewiston.
Funeral Services honoring Peter's life will be celebrated on Friday, September 4, 2026 at 10:00 AM. Committal Services will then follow at Mt. Auburn Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 3, 2026 from 5-8 PM at The Fortin & Pinette Group, 305 Alfred A. Plourde Parkway in Lewiston, 784-4023.
