Auburn - Robert "Speedy" Asselin, 81, of Lewiston, passed away on Monday July 31, 2017 at The Androscoggin Hospice House in Auburn with his family by his side. Robert was born in Auburn on November 7, 1935, a son of the late Joseph and Irene (Poulin) Asselin. He attended local schools before beginning his career as a sheet metal worker. He spent a good part of his life working for The Sheet Metal Workers Union Local 17 and was very active in all their activities. He was a member of Holy Family Church, Prince of Peace Parish. He was a racing enthusiast who spent a great deal of his spare time at the Beechridge racetrack. He was known as "Speedy" to all his race car friends. He taught "rope tying" at the Union Hall to any and all apprentices who were interested. He was an avid reader of all racing magazines and his morning newspaper. He was well known at Rollie's restaurant as he always walked in with his hearty "Good morning everyone". He had great skill in making replacement parts at work or the racetrack. In his later years he treasured the good times spent with his younger brother Daniel. Speedy is survived by his brother Daniel Asselin of Lewiston and companion Eileen Foster of Portland, his nephews: Glen Asselin and wife Lisa of Sabattus, Brian Asselin and wife Denise of Upton, Ma., Ken Landry formerly of Lewiston, Gary Landry and wife Debbie of Lewiston, his niece: Melissa Asselin of Windham and several great nieces and great nephews. Besides his parents he was predeceased by his sister: Theresa Landry and brother-in-law: Ross Landry. Visitation will be held at The Fortin Group Funeral Home in Lewiston on Monday August 7 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Memorial Service will be held following visitation at 6:00 PM at the funeral home followed by a reception at "The Celebration of Life" room at the Funeral Home.
