

AUBURN- Therese (Sylvestre, Gagnon) Landry, devoted Mother, age 91, a lifelong Lewiston & Auburn resident known for her devotion to her family, died Tuesday morning August 7, 2007. The matriarch of a sprawling family, Mrs. Landry rarely missed a birth, wedding, graduation, bridal or baby shower, or any other major event in the lives of her children or grandchildren. She leaves 71 direct descendents in four generations. Mrs. Landry, the daughter of Eva Dulac and Zoel S. Sylvestre, was raised during the Great Depression along with seven brothers and sisters. In 1935 she married Leo Gagnon, a successful building contractor in the Lewiston-Auburn area. The couple had seven children, one of whom, Dorothy, died in 1955. Mrs. Landry was married to Leo Gagnon for 34 years, until his death in 1969. She then married Gerard Landry in 1974, and they enjoyed 27 years of marriage until his death in 2002. A devout Catholic, Mrs. Landry was active in her church, Holy Cross in Lewiston, throughout her life. She contributed her services to numerous church fund raisers and was very active in the women's sodality, which honored her as Mother of the Year in the late 1960's. She was honored for her 90th birthday in 2005 with a family party at a granddaughter's home in Amherst, N.H., a surprise event attended by 65 family members who came from as far as Japan and California. She spent the last seven years of her life at the Clover Manor home in Auburn. Mrs. Landry is survived by her sisters Cecile Burgess of S.C., and Jean Lomonte and her husband Joe of South Paris, ME.; her brother Zoel T. Sylvester and his wife Lydia of Danvers, MA.; her daughters Carmen Greer and her husband Art of Carlsbad, CA., Claire Gould and her husband Vic of Old Orchard Beach, ME., Irene Plante of Londonderry, N.H., Elaine Ouellette and her companion Charles Russell of Manchester, N.H., and Peggy Rioux and her husband Richard of Supply, N.C.; her son Paul Gagnon and his wife Linda of Billerica, MA.; 21 grandchildren; 44 great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild. She is also survived by two step-daughters Claire Biron and her husband Don and Diane Austin and her husband Bill all of Lewiston, ME.; She also has five step-grandchildren and eleven step-great grandchildren.She was predeceased by sisters Margaret Delisle, Gertrude Metayer and Yvonne Caron; and brothers Sylvia and Robert Sylvestre. NOTICE Landry- Died in Auburn on Tuesday August 7, 2007. Mrs. Therese S. age 91 a resident of Auburn. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday 11AM at Holy Cross Church. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.
