Mrs. Mary Fleming, wife of the late Robert H. Fleming, passed away on October 10, 2019. Born in Norfolk, VA, she was a daughter of Alvin C. Hayes and Virginia D. Harrell.
She had served with the U.S.O. during World War II. Though “stubborn” at times, she was caring and loving, someone who loved people and having people around her. She stood up for her beliefs, was quite witty, reflective, and enjoyed the “laughable side of life”. During her lifetime, she served as a docent for the Columbia Historic Foundation, was a graceful ballroom dancer, did some modeling in her younger days and was a member of St. Andrews Baptist Church. She was employed, at times, as a nurse technician and phlebotomist. Her greatest accomplishments are to be remembered as wife, mother, and homemaker for her family. She will be truly missed.
Mrs. Fleming is survived by her children, Paul H. Fleming of Joplin, MO, Deborah A. Snuffer of Pelion, SC and Bruce E. Fleming of Ashburn, VA. Her extended family includes seven grandchildren, one of which has passed away, and four great-grandchildren; sister, Josephine Geiser of Cocoa Beach, FL; brother, Lewis C. Hayes of Chesapeake, VA, as well as many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Fleming is also survived by close companion, Harry R. Chelden of Lexington, SC.
Appreciation, from the family, to all the friends and people involved in helping Mrs. Fleming following a stroke of many years ago. Also, gratitude to the staff at Wellmore of Lexington for all their care of Mrs. Fleming while a resident.
