Robert L. Scoggins, Sr., 89, of Lexington, South Carolina died on Monday, December 2, 2019. Born on June 5, 1930 in Birmingham, Alabama, he is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Ella Corley Scoggins; his children, Jo Ellen Scoggins Norris, Robert L Scoggins, Jr. and Ann Scoggins Cooper (Mark); two brothers, Gene Scoggins (Susie) and Warren Scoggins, along with multiple nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his grandchildren, James Edward Norris (Mari Lou), Jonathon Lee Norris (Staci), Russell Timms Cooper, Brandon Will Scoggins (Sammi), Edward Ray Bell, Staci Nicole Farland (Nick), Cameron Will Scoggins, and Nathan Tharpe (Katie). He is predeceased by his parents, James Will and Eloise Gignilliat Scoggins; brothers, James and Earl; sisters, Violet and Mary, as well as son-in-law, Edward L. Norris. He will also be missed by Max, his Chihuahua and constant companion.
At a very young age, Robert joined the US Navy, served during the original atomic bomb tests in the Marshall Islands and participated in the invasion of Inchon during the Korean War. After being honorably discharged from the Navy, he went to work in sales with the R. L. Bryan Company in Columbia, SC where he won many awards as top salesman. After 25 years, he opened his own business in Lexington, Duplicating Specialties, which he sold and retired from in 1993.
An avid golfer, he was on the original board of directors and instrumental in the founding of the Lexington Country Club. He was a past commander of the American Legion Post Number 7, a lifetime member of Disabled American Veterans, a past member of the Shriners, past Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, a member of the Orphans of the Pacific Navy Mobile Boat Pool organization, a Boy Scout Leader, a Little League Baseball coach and South Carolina constable. He was a member of the Lexington Methodist Church.
He was known for his sense of humor, generosity, hosting of Friday night poker nights and love for his family.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 6, 2019 at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home. Interment will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 10, 2019 at Fort Jackson National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to St. Jude’s, Wounded Warriors or a charity of your choice.
