
LEXINGTON –Alan Richard Edwards, 60, of Lexington, SC., died Thursday, October 17, 2013 in Charleston SC. Alan was the son of A. H. Edwards, deceased; and Kathryn Sanders Edwards. Born October 22, 1952 in Travelers Rest, SC., he was creative and caring man, known for his witty sayings and sense of humor. When asked, “How are you doing?” he would answer “Just riding around!” and you would find yourself smiling. Having many medical setbacks in his life, he has always overcome them, keeping a positive attitude. Spending a year at Shriners Hospital at the age of 12, he was selected to be King of the North – South. Shrine Bowl in 1964. Alan graduated from Travelers Rest High School in 1970 and was the Student Body President. He graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1974 with a BA in Art and a minor in Journalism.
Alan started his professional career at Henderson Advertising in Greenville, SC. Later moving to Columbia to work as Creative Director at Cook Ruef in 1986, and eventually starting his own agency Farnsworth, Edwards & Baker in 1991. In 1993 Alan later became the Senior Art Director at Newman, Saylor & Gregory. Alan finished his career of 17 years at Apex Tool Group in Lexington SC, where he was Manager, of Graphic Communications.
Alan was a talented musician and lover of antiques and old cars. Alan enjoyed restoring cars, was an active member of Good Guys and owned a 1965 Barracuda and 1936 Plymouth. He traveled to car shows and brought home numerous trophies. Alan enjoyed the mountains, camping, cycling, and visits to Wild Dunes with family. He coached his daughter’s LCGSA soccer teams for 5 years, and was a vocal supporter at soccer games and track meets cheering his daughter and teammates.
He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Elizabeth Robbins Edwards and daughter, Emilee Elizabeth Edwards; mother, Kathryn Sanders Edwards of Travelers Rest, SC; sister, Linda Edwards White and husband Roger; son, Slater and daughter, Lucia deceased of Clemson, SC; sister, Carole Leigh Newby and her husband, Danny, and daughter, Logan of St. Mary’s, GA.
Being a cancer survivor ten years earlier, he fought his latest cancer diagnosis with the same determination. Also dear to his heart were his dogs Studebaker, Packard and Henrietta whom he will join in heaven. He leaves behind pets, Calli and Winston
Alan will be remembered for the everyday things in life he treasured, love of family and friends, laughter and the spirit of fun he shared with us all. And as Alan liked to say after each visit, “I’m glad you got to see “me”. The entire family would like to thank the devoted staff of Lexington Oncology, Lexington Medical Center, MUSC and the many prayers from family and friends.
A memorial service will be held at St. Stephen's Lutheran Church in Lexington, SC at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 22.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society or Pets, Incorporated.
Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
