Ben was drafted to the Army early in his life and very patriotic. Upon Honorable Discharge, he entered the field of transportation. Ben was the Director of Harper Motor Lines, Inc., in Elberton, Georgia from 1958-1960; The Traffic Director of Huckabee Transport in Columbia, South Carolina from 1960-1966; The Co-Regional Director of Rates for Pilot Freight Carriers, Inc. in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, from 1966-1968; Traffic Manager of Southeastern Freight Lines, Inc., in Columbia, South Carolina, from 1968-1974; Chief Rates, Rails and Rail Safety in Columbia, South Carolina; and Public Service Commissioner, in Columbia, South Carolina, from 1974-1990. Ben ended his career Independently Consulting for The State of South Carolina. Ben was a member of the International Platform Association of South Carolina, a member of the Law Enforcement’s Association of South Carolina and a Mason. Ben was listed as a noteworthy Transportation Consultant by Marquis Who’s Who.
Ben was loving, caring, and giving to his wife, his three children, his seven grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Ben enjoyed spending time with his family and his friends. He was known to bust a move on the dance floor, always available for a long chat, and loved telling stories. He was an avid collector, sharing pieces of his collections with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Ben is preceded in death by his biological parents, Broadus Eugene Alverson and Fannie Marylee (Grizzell). He is survived by his childhood sweetheart and wife of 63 years, Ruby Kathryn Alverson; two sisters, Johnnie Frances Hunter and Jonell Worley; daughter, Gwendolyn Panter (Charles); daughter, Tina Alverson (Chris Corley); and son, Ben E. Alverson Jr.; granddaughters, Tasha Kathryn Williams-Panter, Chasta Ann Alverson, Megan Alverson, Jessi Nichols (Braden), and Monica Alverson; grandsons, Michael Thomas Christopher Williams and Austin Alverson; great-grandchildren, Aliciana Peyton, Grayson Nesmith-Williams, Eli Nichols, Marshall Nesmith-Williams, and Christopher Alverson; along with many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 20, 2022, at 2 p.m. at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel, 503 North Lake Drive, Lexington, SC. The family will receive friends following the service at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel.
