Betty Jean Barrier Tyson

LEXINGTON - Betty Jean Barrier Tyson, age 80, passed away quietly on Saturday, October 17, 2015. She was known to many as "Maw Maw" and will be missed by everyone. She was the daughter of the late Luther and Jessie Barrier of Granite Quarry, North Carolina.

Mrs. Tyson is survived by her husband of 59 years, Tommy. She also leaves behind her son and daughter in law, Joel and Lisa Tyson, and her granddaughter and her husband, Leigh and Grant Provost. She was so proud of Leigh and her many accomplishments. Mrs. Tyson was predeceased by her daughter, Carla, whom she missed very much. Carla was a special girl and Mrs. Tyson devoted her life to her care. Many, who knew Carla, saw true love and devotion in her mother's love. She was also predeceased by her brother, Robert Lee Barrier.

Mrs. Tyson and her husband are known to many as "L. A. Barrier." She was a past president of the company and spent all of her life in the dump truck business, which started 80 years ago in North Carolina and has grown into the successful business it is today. Until her illness, she was a very active member of St. James Lutheran Church, where she participated in the Lutheran Women's Group, church council and other committees. Mrs. Tyson, her mother, and Aunt Ruth shared their talents making Chrismons. Her spirit will live on through the ornaments she made during her life at St. James. Mrs. Tyson loved her church family. Mrs. Tyson also loved Edisto beach and spent countless hours at the water's edge looking for shells. She treasured the time she spent with her family and friends at her home on the island. She lived her life at the Edisto pace, "slow, easy and quietly." Mrs. Tyson will be laid to rest on Wednesday, October 21. 2015. The service will be held at 3:00 p.m. at St. James Lutheran Church, 1358 South Lake Drive, Lexington, South Carolina 29073. Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 20, 2015, at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexington Chapel.
