Chris was a graduate of Brookland-Cayce (BC) High School and The Citadel in 1962. After graduating from The Citadel, he spent two years on active duty at Fort Jackson, SC, where he was made Company Commander after being in the Army for three months, and the rank of Second Lieutenant. After two years of thinking, “if this was what the Army was like”, he left for the active reserves and retired where he earned the rank of Colonial (06), serving 26 years.
Also, when leaving the active army, he went to work with his father in the family business, C.C. Vaughan Distributer for Toledo Scales. Here, he retired after 50 years.
Chris was a member of Lexington Baptist Church (LBC) where he served as a deacon and very active in his Sunday School Class.
Chris is survived by his wife Carolyn P. Vaughan of 43 years, five children, Christi Vaughan (Troy), Ginger Taylor (Martin), Bill “Buck” Vaughan (Hillarie), Troy Ayer (Catherine) and Tracey Holmes (Alan). He had 16 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by his brother Rick Vaughan, niece Robyn Cain, nephew Ryan Vaughan and former wife, Billie C. Hammock.
He was preceded in death by his father, mother and sister, Martha (Mott) V. Hughes and her husband, Henry Hughes of Loris, SC, sister-in-law Jackie B. Vaughan and niece Vaughan Griffin.
Chris loved to hunt and fish. His father built a house in 1950 on the BIG EDISTO River in Dorchester County where he spent his time hunting, fishing and keeping it up to keep his father happy. This is where he wants half of his ashes to be put on his friend Sam’s grave. Sam was his Brittany Spaniel whom he loved so much.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am, Friday, May 8, 2026, at Lexington Baptist Church. A reception will be held after the service upstairs in the Fellowship Hall.
Chris requests that everyone rejoice in his passing and him going to see the Lord, his father, mother, sister and his grandparents for the first time.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lexington Baptist Church, 308 East Main Street, Lexington, SC 29072.
