

BALLENTINE - Daniel Albert “Buster” Rhame Sr., 82, died peacefully after a short illness on Monday, February 9, 2015. Born February 10, 1932 in Columbia, South Carolina, he was the son of the late Harry Bee Rhame and Julia Gladys Avinger Rhame. A graduate of University High, he was a natural born athlete that excelled in every sport. While there, he was All State in football in 1947, 48 and 49, captain of the Shrine Bowl in 1949, Woodman All American in 1949 and MVP in the Charleston/Columbia Jaycees All Star Game in 1948 and 1949. He was All State in basketball in 1947 and 48 and State Champs in 1948. Baseball was his real love, he achieved All State in 1947, 48, 49 and State Champs in 1949. He was awarded the Bill Stern Award in 1949 and 1950 and was Athlete of the Year in 1948 and 1949 for the Columbia area. He signed with the Cincinnati Reds Baseball Organization in 1950 and played 4 years in the minors.
He served his country in the US Air Force and was stationed in Germany during the Korean War. Upon completion of his service, he returned to the Columbia area and earned his BS degree from The University of South Carolina.
He enjoyed a long successful career as a furniture manufacturer’s representative across several states. He established many life-long friends during his travels.
He loved golf with a passion and enjoyed organizing tournaments across the state and was an avid member of “The Geezers” golf team in Santee, SC. He also loved coaching on many levels, from Pee Wee to Legion Ball encouraging boys and girls to follow their dreams.
“Buster” was instrumental in forming Lake Murray Presbyterian Church where he eagerly served as a deacon and elder. He taught Sunday school to children and adult’s and was involved with the youth groups and organized Christmas plays and Children’s Church.
He was a member of the Chapin Sertoma Club, The American Legion, The Old Timers Group and The Major League Baseball Players Alumni.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Jacqueline Milam Rhame, daughters, Juli and Angie; son, Danny (Sydney) and two grandsons, Kale and Bennett Rhame; nieces, Mitzi Rhame Golod, Bebe Rhame Tarleton and nephew, Tripp Rhame. He is predeceased by his brother H. B. Rhame Jr.
A celebration of a life well lived will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, February 12, 2015 at Lake Murray Presbyterian Church, 2721 Dutch Fork Road with interment in the Celebration Garden following. The family will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall immediately after the service.
With the love of the game forever in his heart, he requests that in lieu of flowers, take a child to a ballgame.
