HOFFMAN, Dr. David Taylor Jr., formerly of Richmond, passed away January 19, 2021 at his home in Lexington, SC. Born in St. Louis, MO, on May 31, 1932, he was the son of the late David Taylor and Viola May Hoffman.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Ruth Weber Hoffman; second wife, Jean Rollins Hoffman; daughter, Lee Ann Hoffman; stepson, Jack Rollins; and sister, Fent Hoffman Ferris.
He is survived by his daughters, Susan Hoffman Jones (Mike) of Powhatan County and Lynn Hoffman Vandevort (David) of Painesville, OH; son, David Taylor Hoffman, III (Joan) of Cayce, SC; stepsons, Jerry Rollins (Jay) of Spartanburg, SC, and Joe Rollins (Barbara) of Chester, VA; grandchildren, Lauren (Jon) Black, Blair (Josh) Jones, Taylor (Paul) Ott, Neal Rollins (Mary Baker), Anna (Ian) Evancho, Daniel (Ashley) Vandevort, Michael Vandevort, Davis Hoffman, and Caroline Hoffman; and five great-grandchildren.
After moving to Buffalo, NY, Dave graduated from Bennett High School, then went on to receive his BS in chemical engineering from Northwestern University. He married his high school sweetheart, Ruth, in 1955 and then received his PhD in 1959 from Purdue University.
Moving back to Buffalo, Dave worked for DuPont for many years. After Ruth passed away in 1973, Dave met and married Jean Rollins, to whom he was married for 40 wonderful years. He left DuPont in 1976 to follow his love of boats by purchasing and operating a marina on Smith Creek in St. Mary’s County Maryland for ten years. Dave and Jean then moved to Spartanburg where he was a Six Sigma consultant for the textile industry, then to Jean’s hometown in Alabama where he taught math at the local community college before finally moving to Lexington.
Dave was a brilliant man with lots of opinions who loved the outdoors (especially being on the water), travel, science, and learning. Though his children and grandchildren might remember him as being a bit grumpy at times (in an affectionate sort of way), he adored his family and would always smile when asked to. He will be missed and loved every single day.
